"GETTING YOU OUT THERE"

Indian River Lagoon Comb Jelly Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

In the cooler Florida months, bioluminescent Comb Jellies congregate in the protected waters of the Indian River Lagoon, the most bio-diverse estuary in North America. Comb Jellies are clear, glob-like creatures that, despite their name, cannot sting! Paddle along as your guide takes you through the mangrove and palm-laced shores in search of the best Comb Jellies in the area. Once you discover their unmistakable blue light, you can catch and hold these gentle glowing creatures as their blue light pulsates down their eight rib-like structures. Check out the tour we hosted for our friends at Visit Florida!

In addition to the stars, the myriad of protected wildlife around you, and the Comb Jelly’s bioluminescence, their “ribs” are lined with cilia that they use to propel themselves, so when you cast a flashlight on them just right, they’ll also refract a dynamic rainbow-y light show! We’re the only tour company that lets you net, contain, and observe all of these remarkable Comb Jellies. They’re right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for unique experiences.

Indian River Lagoon

Indian River Lagoon, which comprises Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, and Banana River, covers 156 miles of space. The lagoon is home to numerous plant life and wildlife, making it one of the most sought-after places in Florida.

More than the views and the species living in the lagoon, one thing that attracts tourists and locals is the rare phenomenon called bioluminescence. The bioluminescent dinoflagellate and comb jellies are responsible for the bioluminescent waters in the area. Book a bioluminescence kayaking tour to fully experience the rare phenomenon.

Where Is the Best Place to See Bioluminescence in the Indian River Lagoon?

Kayaking near Cocoa Beach in the Indian River Lagoon can make the most of your bioluminescent experience. Its peak season is from July to October when the lagoon becomes enchanting — and the microscopic creatures' blue-green light is cast within the water. Our kayaking tours at A Day Away last about 90 minutes and cover about 6 miles. You can also expect to see plenty of plant, bird, and fish species. To learn more, contact us.

What Time of Year Is Best for Bioluminescence Kayaking?

While you can experience bioluminescence any time of the year, fall or spring may be the best time to go when it's not too hot or cold. Some also prefer to go in the summer as it's abundant with dinoflagellates illuminating the waters of the Indian River Lagoon. When you go in the winter, the comb jellies may brighten the lagoon.

Kayaking through the Indian River Lagoon is a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure for families, even children. Kids 5 and up are welcome to join. Children under five who are comfortable in confined spaces can also join the tour.

Is It Safe to Touch Bioluminescent Water?

Comb jellies, unlike typical jellyfish, are completely harmless as they don't sting. These fascinating creatures emit a beautiful glow in the water, especially when disturbed by your paddle. During the tour, we'll guide you on how to safely interact with them and other marine life, ensuring you have a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience. Our expert instructions will help you make the most of your adventure while respecting the natural environment.
